Fireworks harder to find and more expensive in NH; still illegal in MA

SEABROOK, N.H. — Jim Thomas comes to “Over the Border Fireworks” in Seabrook, New Hampshire every year to stock up for the 4th of July.

“They’re 500 gram cakes that go higher and give you a bigger display,” he said.

He’s looking forward to the holiday weekend. “Celebrate Independence Day. You know, have some fun. It’s 4th of July, it only happens once a year,” said Thomas.

But this year he had a tough time finding his favorite fireworks. “About half of what I wanted,” he said.

The owner tells Boston 25 that the cost to ship is sky high and supply chain issues have caused prices to take off.

“Yeah, everything goes up plus he’s having a hard time because everything comes over on a container,” said Thomas.

The owner says it used to cost $10 thousand for a container of fireworks from China it’s now more than $40 thousand.

Customers like Thomas feel the pain, but he still spent a pretty penny.

“Do you want to tell us how much you spent today,” we asked.

“A thousand dollars,” he said.

“A thousand dollars on fireworks? So, you must put on a good show?”

“Ahh yeah,” said Thomas.

Thomas lives in New Hampshire where fireworks are legal however, in neighboring Massachusetts, they are not.

Over the weekend, state police and partners confiscated nearly $30,000 worth of fireworks from people bringing them back over the border.

And they have this warning for people who do the same.

“It’s not okay and it is disruptive to our citizens. So, we all have a right to our peace if you will. And it is illegal,” said Chief Brenda Perez of the Brockton Police Department.
